Educational Program

The Early Years Learning Framework, is the guiding framework that Possum Magic uses to develop our stimulating, flexible, individual and exciting program. Research explains children are natural learners and develop to their fullest, when they are encouraged to develop at their own pace, not that of their educators.

Possum Magic educators place a priority on deliberately spending personal quality time with each child, getting to know them individually, so we can create a program that is unique to each child and maximises their full potential and development.

Learning and growth occurs differently at each stage of development and therefore it is important to ensure a child feels safe and comfortable in their environment, with their educators and small friends within the centre. This program is built in partnership with parents and communication with each family is important on a daily basis to update a parent on what has occurred throughout a day with their child and to receive feedback from parents, to ensure the program is reaching every child’s individual needs.

The program will encompass the ability and interests of the child and commences the learning building blocks of literacy, maths and language. The backbone of this program is the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) for Australia of "Belonging, Being and Becoming".

The EYLF defines the principles, practices and outcomes essential to every early learning program and is designed to ensure all children, from birth to five years of age, receive high quality learning experiences.

At Possum Magic our programs are based on the principles of respect, responsibility, and community.

The EYLF is the Australian Government’s national framework for early childhood education, and a key component of the National Quality Framework (NQF) for early childhood education and care which is designed to encourage continuous improvement of education and care services across Australia.

The Framework has a strong emphasis on play-based learning and aims to achieve five overall Learning Outcomes:

The Framework has a strong emphasis on play-based learning and aims to achieve five overall Learning Outcomes:

  • Children have a strong sense of identity
  • Children are connected with and contribute to their world
  • Children have a strong sense of wellbeing
  • Children are confident and involved learners

National Quality Standard

The National Quality Standard (NQS) is a key aspect of the National Quality Framework (NQF) and sets a high, national benchmark for early childhood education and care services in Australia.

These standards include seven Quality Areas against which centres are assessed:

  • Educational program and practice
  • Children’s health and safety
  • Physical environment
  • Staffing arrangements
  • Relationships with children
  • Collaborative partnerships with families and communities
  • Leadership and service management The Australian Children’s Education & Care Quality Authority

Additionally, our Possum Magic program is inspired by the philosophy of Reggio Emilia and the philosopher Loris Malaguzzi...

A curriculum inspired by Reggio Emilia means that our educators:

Understand that children form their own personality during early years of development and that children are endowed with "a hundred languages" through which they can express their ideas.

In the Reggio approach, the teacher is considered a co-learner and collaborator with the child and not just an instructor.

As a brief overview, the below give you an understanding of the developmental goals the Possum Magic educators work towards, with your child, for each yearly milestone.

Nursery Developmental Goals

  • Understands simple communicative gestures like pointing to what they want or waving 'bye bye'
  • Responds to own name being called, family names and familiar objects
  • Sits without support and stands by pulling themselves up using furniture
  • Show initial signs of empathy and kindness to others

Toddler Developmental Goals
